Post-doctoral Research Fellow (f/m/d)

This position should be filled by August 1st, 2021 or as soon as possible thereafter. The regular working hours will be 39.8 hours per week with a limited contract to December, 31, 2023. Salary: Pay grade 13 TV-L.

The appointed post-doctoral researcher contributes to the research project “Deliberation Laboratory (DeLab)” funded by the Volkswagen Foundation. The project is a joint collaboration between Theoretical and Empirical Political Science (Prof. John Parkinson, Maastricht University and Dr. Valentin Gold, University of Göttingen), Computational Linguistics (Dr. Annette Hautli-Janisz, University of Konstanz), Computational Rhetoric (Prof. Katarzyna Budzynska, Warsaw University of Technology) and Computational Argumentation and AI (Prof. Chris Reed, University of Dundee).

The main goal is to develop a virtual moderator – a conversational AI bot – that can detect when discussions on social media are getting destructive, and intervenes to help de-escalate online discussions. With DeLab, an online experimentation environment is built to explore the nature, causes, and consequences of citizen’s perceptions in deliberative public online dialogue across languages.

The appointed post-doctoral research fellow will mainly focus on linking theoretical aspects with empirical and computational requirements and on designing the laboratory experiments including applications on social media data, especially Twitter. The successful candidate will hold a highly qualified PhD in in Political/Social Science or a closely related computational social science discipline and
– must provide keen interest and solid background in (deliberative) communication and/or social media research
– must prove competencies in computational social science and a data science programming language, preferable R or Python
– should have experiences in designing and running online experiments
– should have experiences in interdisciplinary collaborations
